Friday 15th to Monday 18th October 2010
The Mountains of Mourne is a compact granite range located in County Down in the south-east corner of Northern Ireland approximately an hour’s drive from Belfast. It is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty and is proposed as the first national park in Northern Ireland. The Mountains of Mourne are partly owned by the National Trust and feature Northern Ireland’s highest mountain, Slieve Donard at 849 metres (2,790 feet).
The Mournes are perfect for a weekend trip in that they are a compact area with plenty of attainable peaks, some breathing scenery, easy access but also a sense of remoteness.
This latest visit to the Emerald Isle follows memorable trips to The Burren in County Clare, The Blue Stack Mountains in County Donegal and to Killarney in County Kerry by members of the Hornsea Walking Club.
The format of the weekend will be the well tried formula commencing with an early morning flight from the East Midlands Airport to Belfast International Airport. At the time of writing this flyer ‘bmi baby’ is quoting a return flight for £52.98 including taxes and charges.
The party will be collected at the airport by coach for a journey south to the coastal resort of Newcastle (famous for its seaweed baths). This will be our base for three night’s bed and breakfast accommodation in en-suite double and shared twin rooms at the Avoca Hotel located on the resort’s central promenade with bar and restaurant facilities.
A reduced rate of £30 per person per night has been agreed. Newcastle is a holiday resort that provides nightlife with a choice of food, drink and criaic.
There will be two guided walks on the Saturday and Sunday led by Caroline Hart a local experienced guide plus an optional walk on the Friday afternoon and time on Monday to explore Newcastle and to visit the shops.
Accommodation will be limited and you are recommended to place a £50 non-refundable deposit with Chris Smith to secure your place.
Summary of costs per person:-
Flight: £53 (booking early to get the lowest price)
Coach Transfers: £40 (Belfast International Airport to Newcastle and return)
Accommodation: £90 (three night’s bed and breakfast in shared en-suite rooms)
Guided Walks: £30 (Saturday and Sunday – packed lunches will be required)
N.B. Any economies of scale relating to the coach travel and guiding cost will be reflected in a reduction.
